Ilanga, which means “sun” in Zulu, is a simple yet striking installtion with intersecting metal tubes, that cast a shadow of a cross onto a polished concrete surface—like a primitive sundial. Over the course of a year, the cross moves over the surface, aligning in the same position only on the two equinoxes.
The structure was created from an old water reservoir about 10 metres in diameter, that was going to be demolished.
It was one of several installations at Eden Rock Luxury Estate near Pennington in KwaZulu-Natal, originally designed to give the estate a mythical theme. While the estate has since moved away from the mythical concept, Ilanga is a unique and beautiful feature within this up-market development, located next door to Selborne Golf Estate.
