Thula; “be quiet” in Zulu, is another installation created around the mythical theme at Eden Rock, mentioned under Ilanga. While I designed the layout, the late Lizette Van Huysteen must take all the credit for building this amazing space; most of the work was handcrafted.
The ground finishes included concrete and loose material. The rectangular concrete seats were cast in concrete, and I was concerned that they wouldn’t turn. Nothing was too much for Lizette—she had the metal support pipes made with bearings, and the seats turned.
Maintenance was a challenge, with leaves dropping from the forest and mixing with the loose material. If we did it again, we would fix all the ground elements in mortar, concrete and epoxies.
